Prostate Cancer Demystified

Prostate cancer, the second most prevalent cancer among men worldwide after lung cancer, originates in the prostate gland. It typically advances slowly, initially asymptomatic. As it progresses, urinary problems and discomfort may develop. Diagnosis often involves measuring prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, but elevated PSA can result from non-cancerous conditions. High PSA may prompt a digital rectal exam and a possible biopsy. Treatment options include surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy. Lifestyle choices, like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight, can mitigate the risk of prostate cancer.

Symptoms

  • Urinary changes
  • Fatigue
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Bone pain
  • Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Swelling or fluid buildup in the legs or feet

Interesting Facts

  • Prostate cancer is often slow-growing and may not require immediate treatment. In some cases, 'active surveillance' is a safe and effective approach, avoiding unnecessary interventions.
  • Prostate cancer can be hereditary. If you have a close male relative (father, brother) with the disease, your risk is higher. Genetic factors play a significant role.
